Usedom Island · Baltic Sea

Zinnowitz and the surrounding area

Ostseebad Zinnowitz (Baltic seaside resort of Zinnowitz) lies in the north-west of Usedom Island, between the Baltic Sea and the Achterwasser lagoon. The town combines a sandy beach and seaside resort architecture with short distances to shops, restaurants and the station of the Usedomer Bäderbahn (UBB) railway.

The emblem of Zinnowitz is the seahorse: it has stood for the town since the seaside resort’s 100th anniversary in 1951. Today the municipal coat of arms shows it in gold on a blue background, next to a green yew branch with red berries on silver. The branch recalls the Slavic roots of the town’s name, which is traced back to a word for the yew.

Baltic Sea beach

Zinnowitz lies on the Baltic coast in the north-west of Usedom. The large, wide and long beach of fine sand invites you to take long walks along the shore. It is up to 40 m wide and has 11 beach access points; a designated naturist (FKK) beach is located at accesses 8R to 8S. The beach is approx. 500 m from the holiday apartments, about 10 minutes on foot. Tap the photos for more beach pictures in every season.

Zinnowitz Pier (Seebrücke) “Vineta”

The 315 m long “Vineta” pier with its diving gondola (Tauchgondel) is the town’s landmark and the starting point for walks along the promenade. Tap the photos for more pictures and the history of the pier. Markets are held regularly all year round in front of the pier, on the spa promenade and on the market square. The pier is approx. 500 m from the holiday apartments.

Market square and spa promenade

In front of the pier, the market square adjoins the spa promenade – markets are held here regularly all year round. Zinnowitz is also known as the cultural capital of Usedom Island: every summer the Vineta-Festspiele (open-air theatre festival) take place on the open-air stage, and the Blechbüchse is the town’s yellow theatre. Tap the photos for impressions of life in the town in every season.

The blue bascule bridge connects the town of Wolgast with Usedom Island and opens at set times for ships on the Peenestrom. It works on the balance beam principle: two raised levers with the striking blue counterweights lift the moving span, which is about 42 metres long and 19 metres wide. It is driven by electric motors of 45 kilowatts each. The bridge carries both the B 111 main road and the railway line to the island. In Wolgast, the harbour and the old town are well worth a visit.

A new bridge is being built alongside it as part of the Wolgast bypass: a cable-stayed bridge about 1.4 kilometres long, according to the road authority the largest of its kind in Europe. It will have a clearance of 42 metres, so ships can pass along the Peenestrom without the bridge being opened – which means no more waiting at the bridge. Until then, the fixed opening times of today’s bascule bridge still apply.
